The lens is often neglected in machine vision. Most of the user pay attention only to a number of pixels, forgetting that if the minimum point imaged by the lens is 20 µm diameter there is no sense of using 5µm pixels sensor … the same information is splitted over many pixels but the over-all resolution is that given by the lens. The most popular and economic lens used in machine vision: NIKKOR AF 50, F-MOUNT. This lens suits perfectly line scan cameras from DALSA, ATMEL or BASLER for up to 2048 pixels of 14µm.
